Hydroelectric energy has been the main field of interest of HORIZON S.A. since its establishment. In 1994 the company built the first ever private small hydropower plant in Greece. In total, the company has installed projects of total capacity 7.9 MW and participates in some of the investment schemes. Today, HORIZON S.A. has significant expertise in this field, and it has even developed systems for optimizing the efficiency.

Since 2010, HORIZON S.A. has developed strong interest for the technology of biomass gasification. The company has acquired two pilot – scale gasification systems, each one of different feeding and power, for research purposes. In addition, it has obtained small-scale briquetting equipment experimental work, in terms of thebriquette’s quality and its further utilization in the gasifier, as part of the design of the supply chain for a gasification complex. Meanwhile, HORIZON S.A. participates in research projects, on the field of biomass gasification, for the development of expertise.

Solar energy is a type of Renewable Energy with excellent potential in Greece, due to the many annual hours of sunshine. HORIZON S.A. participates in energy communities that invest in photovoltaic parks, while it is also activated in the combination of solar energy production and storage for self-production through net metering.

HORIZON S.A., being always a pioneer in the field of energy, realized early the value of energy storage. In 2019, it installed the first energy storage system in Greece that is connected to the grid, aiming at the energy autonomy of a small industrial building in an remote area. In 2018, the company received approvals to participate in two research projects in the field of energy storage using the two most widely used ways of energy storage worldwide: lithium battery and hydrogen fuel cells. In addition, it owns an electric car and a car charger to serve its staff.

HORIZON S.A. develops circular economy applications and utilization of by-products. The possibility of utilization of residues (agro – prunes) and municipal solid waste through briquetting and gasification offer solution to the modern industry and to municipalities in terms of reducing the ecological footprint, and at the same time, the possibility of power generation. In addition, these activities are combined with the activities of HORIZON S.A.’s subsidiary company HORIZON DIATROFIKI. Through the process of extraction and distillation of plant materials, it is possible to utilize plant residues and then to further utilize the new by-products.

HORIZON S.A. provides consulting services for energy investments, undertakes the preparation of the necessary studies, the licensing process, the supervision of construction works, and maintenance works on energy projects. In addition, it holds collaborations for the conducting of energy inspections and energy saving studies for public and private buildings.

HORIZON S.A. develops collaborations with Greek and foreign research institutes and participates in European, transnational and national research projects, with the ultimate goal of developing expertise in the fields of energy and environment.
